Certification from NSF International Reinforces CytoSport’s Efforts as a Leading Sports Supplement Manufacturer
ANN ARBOR, Mich. and BENICIA, Calif. – CytoSport Inc., a premier manufacturer of sports-oriented nutritional products, has announced that Muscle Milk® (Vanilla Crème, Chocolate and Cookies 'N Crème) has earned certification from NSF International’s Athletic Banned Substances Certification program. The NSF Certified for Sport™ program is designed to reduce the risk that a dietary or sports supplement contains banned substances.
The NSF Certified for Sport™ program was developed in response to growing demands by athletes, coaches, team owners and others concerned about finding banned substances in sports nutrition products. NSF International’s Certified for Sport™ program is recognized by the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and the PGA, among other major sports organizations.
“It has been our mission to provide only the highest quality nutritional products to both professional and amateur athletes striving to reach their potential. For over 11 years, CytoSport has manufactured high quality, efficacious products and this certification from NSF International solidifies that mission,” said Chris Kildow, Director of Sports Marketing, CytoSport.
CytoSport™ fully supports the efforts of NSF International and leading sports organizations, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC), NFL and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), to eliminate the use of performance-enhancing drugs and steroids.
CytoSport’s Certified for Sport™ approval complements CytoSport’s existing NSF International Dietary Supplements and NSF Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for Sport Certifications. To receive these certifications, CytoSport underwent a stringent testing analysis, a GMP facility audit and banned substances screening. CytoSport also met the requirements of NSF/ANSI Standard 173, the only American national standard for dietary supplements, which NSF developed to address the safe manufacturing of dietary supplements. The NSF standard includes criteria for testing products for contaminants and heavy metals, verifying that what’s on the label is in the bottle and auditing manufacturing facilities to ensure they operate using GMPs. In addition, NSF’s GMP for Sport certification component requires two annual GMP for Sport facility audits and manufacturer affidavits to verify that CytoSport does not source any ingredients on the World Anti-Doping Agency, NFL, MLB, and CCES banned substances lists.
NSF International Certification also requires ongoing monitoring and testing to verify that certified products remain free of contaminants and banned substances, including stimulants, narcotics, steroids, diuretics, beta-2-agonists, masking agents and other substances.
Edward Wyszumiala, General Manager of NSF International’s Dietary Supplements Certification Programs stated, “CytoSport has already been certified by NSF’s Dietary Supplements and GMP for Sport Certification programs. Now by also meeting NSF International’s Certified for Sport™ program requirements, CytoSport has gone above and beyond to demonstrate their overall commitment in ensuring Muscle Milk® meets the most stringent standards.”

NSF’s Dietary Supplement Certification program verifies that what is on the label is in the bottle and that the product does not contain undeclared ingredients or contaminants. NSF’s Athletic Banned Substances Certification program builds on the dietary supplement certification program by including screening that ensures the product does not contain banned or prohibited substances. MLB, the MLB Player’s Association, NFL, the NFL Player’s Association, PGA, LPGA and the CCES have all chosen NSF’s Certified for Sport™ program to help verify the products their athletes use are safer and free of banned substances. MILWAUKEE -- For the second straight season, Ryan Braun will have some hardware to show for his efforts at the plate.
After batting .320 with 32 home runs and 114 RBIs, Braun became the first Brewer since Paul Molitor, more than two decades ago, to win a Silver Slugger Award in consecutive years. Since 1980, the awards have been given annually to the best offensive player at each position as selected by the Major League Baseball managers and coaches.
The other National League Silver Sluggers were Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez and Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano.
Braun is the third Brewers player to take home the award in consecutive seasons. Molitor was the American League's top designated hitter in 1987 and 1988, and Cecil Cooper won the award as a first baseman in three straight seasons from 1980-82.
Before 2005, the Brewers had been shut out in Silver Slugger balloting since 1990, but now they have a winner in four of the past five seasons. Prince Fielder, who was edged at first base for the second straight year by Pujols, won in 2007. Then-Brewers outfielder Carlos Lee was a Silver Slugger in 2005.
Braun's numbers were certainly deserving in 2009. With 203 hits, he became the third Brewer ever to lead his league in that category and the first since Molitor led the AL in 1991. Braun also became the eighth player in Major League history with at least 100 runs, 100 RBIs, 200 hits, 30 homers, 20 stolen bases and a .300 average in the same season.
The numbers keep on coming. Braun has 103 home runs in his first three Major League seasons, sixth-most in baseball history behind two active players -- Pujols (114) and the Yankees' Mark Texeira (107) -- and three Hall of Famers -- Ralph Kiner (114), Eddie Matthews (112), Joe DiMaggio (107).

Matt Reed Becomes the First American Male to Win the Toyota Cup
DALLAS, TEXAS – October 12, 2009 –Olympian Matty Reed etched his name in triathlon history books this weekend, becoming the first American Male to win the Toyota Cup. Reed dominated the Dallas US Open race Sunday to clinch the Life Time Fitness Series Race for to the Toyota Cup.

Reed had a solid lead coming into the Dallas race with wins in Minneapolis and Chicago, but with the points doubled for the final race and a $20,000 prize, elite triathletes from all over the world were looking for a big payday.
Three-time series winner Australian Greg Bennett posed the biggest threat, being the only racer that could catch Reed. But two-time Olympic medalist Bevan Docherty, Stuart Hayes and 19 other elite athletes lined up for a shot at victory.
“I knew that this race would draw big names and I was prepared to race what I had to for the win,” said Reed. “I wanted to show I am versatile in all threes sports and that I am here to stay. I really wanted to win the series and wanted to beat a great field and win Dallas to do it.”
Reed exited the water second, leading a large group and immediately asserted himself on the bike. Reed was able to push the pace and some big names didn’t make the training pack and were forced to try ride up to the 6’5” power rider.
“When I saw the pack near me, I just continued to drive hard and gapped them. I had bad thoughts for a second or two, but realized I was prepared to race from the gun and knew I could ride hard and still run fast,” said Reed. “I was prepared to run for the win if needed.”
Reed got off the bike with roughly a minute lead and was in control of the run the whole way. With a few miles to go, Reed cruised.
“I have learned to trust my training and I know that I must use that mentally to my advantage. I went hard until the turn around and calculated I had a 50 second advantage and was very pleased. I knew I could enjoy that last 2 miles.”
Reed grabbed the tape, the Dallas victory and the Toyota Cup. Bennett finished 30 seconds back and Docherty third.
Matt “Boom Boom” Reed is one of the most decorated triathletes in competition today. A 2008 U.S. Olympian and defending national triathlete champion, Reed has been a dominant force in the triathlon world since 1994. Born in New Zealand, Reed now lives and trains in Boulder, Colorado.

British triathlete and CytoSport Athlete Chrissie Wellington claimed her 3rd-straight Ironman World Championship title in Kona, Hawaii, and broke the previous course record in the process
Britain's Chrissie Wellington captured her third straight Ironman World Championship, finishing in a course record 8:54:02 — nearly 20 minutes ahead of Australia's Mirinda Carfrae. Wellington broke Paula Newby-Fraser's mark of 8:55:28 set in 1992 and finished 23rd overall.
"I never thought I'd come here and break Paula's record," Wellington said. "She's an absolute legend. I feel kind of guilty doing it. I had to dig so hard to do it. I hope I can continue to be the champion that you can all be proud of," Wellington said. Wellington was controlled and confident throughout the race, easily beating last year's winning time of 9:06:23 and breaking the long-standing record of eight-time winner Newby-Fraser.
The only stumble was at the finish line, where she rolled on the ground in celebration. An emotional Wellington was speechless. "Mahalo," she said, using the Hawaiian word for "thank you."
Wellington became the third woman in the event's 31-year history to win three straight, joining Newby-Fraser and Natascha Badmann.
She surged to the front with a dominating performance on the bike and opened up an 11-minute lead to start the run. She sailed the rest of the way on foot, leaving the women fighting for second place and passing several men.
"I'm so proud of what I achieved today," Wellington said. "I want to thank my family and friends for coming all this way to support me, along with the crowd who were the wings beneath my wings when I needed them most."
Wellington began the bike in eighth place and quickly moved into second by the 10-mile mark, trailing Lucie Zelenkova. A few miles later, Wellington blew past Zelenkova along Queen Kaahumanu Highway for the lead and built a comfortable cushion over Canada's Tereza Macel by the turnaround.
After a bike split of 4:52:07, her lead grew to more than 17 minutes just 10 miles into the run.
A field of 164 pros were among the 1,800 triathletes from 58 countries that began the race just as the sun rose above Mount Hualalai.

Team CytoSport athlete and 2008 Olympian Matt Reed maintained his top form this season by winning the historic 27th Chicago Triathlon on Sunday, August 30. Reed overcame a 47 second deficit to Andy Potts and Cameron Dye after the swim with a dominating, race-best 54:52 bike and held on with a third-best 33:16 run to finish with a overall time of 1:48:27, 57 seconds ahead of runner-up Matt Chrabot.
Reed took great pride in winning the historic Chicago Triathlon "I've know about this race since I was a young kid. I 've always want to win it. I have looked up to Chicago champions Spencer Smith, Simon Lessing, Chris McCormack, and Greg Welch so to have my name on a list of winners with them is fantastic."
One of the race favorites Andy Potts, was unable to complete the event after suffering a crash during the bike.

Muscle Milk athlete Chrissie Wellington continued her remarkable run of success by capturing the Timberman Ironman® 70.3 event at Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire on August 23.
The 32-year-old British two-time World Champion completed the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run in 4 hours, 15 minutes and 11 seconds - leading home British rival Catriona Morrison by nearly 2 minutes.
The victory was Wellington’s fourth win of 2009, including two full-distance Ironman® events in Port Macquarie, Australia and Roth, Germany.
After turning professional in 2007, Wellington has remarkably twice taken the World Championship title which is held annually in Hawaii.
Additionally, she has also twice triumphed on the slopes of Alpe d’Huez in the long distance triathlon staged on the mountain made famous by the Tour de France.
The Brit had to fight back at Timberman after emerging from the swim in third place. She chased down and passed her rivals on the cycling leg and opened up the gap on her initial rivals during the run.
On the second lap of the run course, Wellington had to up the pace to beat the closing Morrison who recorded the fastest time of the run.
Wellington’s victory was her second consecutive win at the New Hampshire event.
This year’s World Championship on the island of Kona, Hawaii will be staged on October 10 with Wellington aiming for her third successive world crown.

Second-Place finish for Muscle Milk Porsche RS Spyder in LMP2 class debut
LEXINGTON, OH, Saturday, August 8, 2009 - It may have been their first race of the season, but the Team CytoSport Muscle Milk squad came out strong by scoring its first podium finish in its LMP2 class debut in the American Le Mans Series at Mid-Ohio today.
The duo of Greg Pickett and Klaus Graf placed second in class, and fourth overall, aboard their #6 Muscle Milk Porsche RS Spyder following an impressive run by the German and a comeback from an early penalty.
With the race going yellow on the first lap, the action only truly picked up during the lap 10 restart with team owner and driver Greg Pickett running third in class and fifth overall. While putting in competitive lap times in moist conditions, Pickett made contact with a GT2 car and was sent to the penalty box for a 'stop and go' on lap 24. The penalty cost him one position and relegated him to fourth in class. Soon after, he would enter pit lane again, this time for a driver change, fuel and Michelin tires.
When Graf took the reigns of the Muscle Milk RS Spyder, he exited pit lane fifth in class and 15th overall. It didn't take long for him to make his way back up the field, at times running three seconds faster a lap than his closest competitors. Constantly pushing the car has hard as he could, he found himself in third place in the LMP2 category with less than an hour to go and made his way past the second-place car of Adrian Fernandez a few laps later.
Following his second and final pit stop, Graf was once again running third in class. That's when he entered a heated battle with the #20 car of Marino Franchitti. The German driver kept putting pressure on him and it paid off. Franchitti made contact with lapped traffic and Graf jumped on the occasion and took over second place in class and fourth overall. Despite continuing to put in blistering lap times, the first place car of Fernandez was too far ahead for Graf to catch up, but he did cut the lead down from 49 to 10 seconds in the final 15 minutes of the two hour and 45 minute event.
There won't be much time to celebrate its first podium finish for Team CytoSport as its next challenge comes next weekend at Road America.
What they had to say:
Klaus Graf, Driver #6 Muscle Milk Porsche RS Spyder
"I had such a good time out there. Right from the beginning they told me you got to keep pushing and pushing. And he kept telling me every five laps, Klaus, you got to keep pushing. That's what I did the whole race. The Muscle Milk Porsche RS Spyder was very, very good in the race and the Michelin tires were up to the task in every way. We made the right changes and I really have to thank Greg Pickett for making the decision to buy the car, making the changes to the team in order to run it the way we run it. Hats off to all the guys on the team, that was unbelievable. I couldn't be happier. I had a really good day."
Greg Pickett, Owner/driver #6 Muscle Milk Porsche RS Spyder
"Obviously we are very pleased. I'm pleased for Porsche, I'm pleased for Michelin, I'm pleased for our brand Muscle Milk and all of our employees and friends and family and fans of both the brand and Porsche. I'm almost speechless, which is a little bit rare for me. Klaus did a spectacular job. He ran many, many laps as fast or faster than the leaders and after it was all said and done if it hadn't have been for my mistake in traffic by nudging a GT2 competitor which got me a penalty, that was really the difference in the race. You're bound to be a little bit rusty but all in all I'm just smiling. It's a good day."

Muscle Milk fueled the X-Games taking over the athlete lounges and supplying product for the top athletes in the games, including Muscle Milk team rider Kevin Windham. Competing against a stellar field of world elite professionals on the event’s International-distance course, Haskins won the women’s division and Reed the men’s division, each taking home a first-place prize of $20,000.
The men’s division featured the closest-ever finish in Life Time Fitness Triathlon history, with Reed edging American Andy Potts at the finish by two-tenths of a second and Australian Greg Bennett finishing four seconds behind. In the women’s division, Haskins crossed the line one minute and 23 seconds ahead of Great Britain’s Julie Dibens.
Reed and Haskins also emerged as point leaders in the 2009 Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup. Today’s event was the first of the five races that comprise the Series, which continues Sun., July 26 at the Nautica New York City Triathlon.
In addition to the professional field, more than 3,000 amateur athletes participated, representing eight countries and more than 40 states.

World records continued to tumble at the Quelle Challenge Roth with Chrissie Wellington und Rebekah Keat all going under the world's best time set here by Yvonne van Vlerken (8:45:48) last year.
Wellington and her colleagues (third place went to Scotland’s Catriona Morrison) stole the show in Roth, treating the massive crowd, estimated at more than 150,000, to an awesome display of power triathlon.
At the bike/run transition was obvious that Wellington, the two-time world champion, was clearly living up to her three promises of having fun, winning the race and targeting the previous best time. With her brother watching her compete for the very first time, Wellington put on a great show, blitzing the bike in 4:40:28 and setting herself up for a date with destiny. A "conservative" marathon with a couple of bad patches gave Wellington a split of 2:57-enough to ensure she shattered the previous best time, lowering it to a staggering 8:31:59.
Wellington's record was even more remarkable given she'd been ill in the weeks leading up to the race. "That was as near a perfect race as I am ever going to get. It was the perfect day, with perfect conditions for world record days and this course is as phenomenal as everybody says it is. The supporters have blown me away, just the enthusiasm and the energy you get from people."

About Surf Shop Challenge:
Originally conceived to provide a fun and competitive format for the hardcore surf shop riders, the SURFER Shop Team Challenge was one of the most popular and exciting Southern California contests of the early 1980s. Through the years the contest has evolved, with five qualifying regional events around the country, culminating in a national championship at the famed Huntington Beach Pier in sunny Southern California. The underlying principles, however, have remained the same. The Oakley Surf Shop Challenge fueled by Muscle Milk is still about giving back to the shops, the true backbone of the industry. Each year the competition level rises, the stakes become greater and the prizes become bigger.

Boulder, Colorado- USA Olympian Matty Reed showed again just why he may be one of the most versatile triathletes in the world, winning the brutally hard REV3 Half-Ironman in 3:59:28. Taking the lead immediately upon exiting the swim, Reed showcased his strong talent in all 3 sports.
"The course was crazy hard, like uphill, downhill, corner, up hill, repeat," Reed said. "I knew it was going to be a strong man's course and that is why I came. I am thrilled to break 4 hours on this course."
Reed, who recently won the Pan American Championships in the drafting format of triathlon, is showing that he truly is one of the rare 3-sport (swimming, biking, running) triathletes.
Today, Reed took control of the race at the gun with Boulder's Tim O'Donnell, and the two blasted the swim together. Once on the bike, Reed powered away from the field and entered T2 with a 2:26 lead. That was all Reed needed as at half way of the run the lead was still at 2:20. Reed then settled in, knowing the race was his by the smile on his face on the out and back section of the run. Reed then enjoyed the finish and rolled across the line in honor of "The Blazeman" (waronals.com), the charity he races for.
"I really love the half-ironman distance. I can show my strengths and really enjoy racing fast and hard," Reed stated. “This distance, an athlete must be able to bike solid and on this course no one can hide. The hills made it an honest course.”
Many were calling the REV3 one of the hardest races on the planet. Reed seemed to just stride along on the run, showing the triathlon world again that his short course speed and his powerful skills combine well at the half-ironman distance. Reed won the 70.3 Oceanside race earlier in the season.
The 2008 Olympian Reed has won all but one race he has entered in 2009 (a flat tyre ruined the streak) and enters a race-heavy part of his season.
"I have put in a good training block this past month and am looking forward to some World Cup racing later this month and then hitting some non-drafting short course races in July. It is fun for me to race across all three formats. My heart loves to race hard and I cant say enough about this race today.... It was hard!!!"
Reed recently raced the Boulder Bolder 10km citizen’s race where he finished a solid 12th, a good training day for the year around Boulder resident.
Up next: World Cup Championship Series Race- Washington D.C. And then World Cup Des Moines.

CytoSport Secures Preliminary Court-Ordered Injunction of Muscle Power Due to Infringement of Muscle Milk® Trademark
On Wednesday, May 6th in Sacramento, CA, a Federal Court issued an order requiring Vital Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (VPX) to immediately remove Muscle Power from the marketplace after concluding that the product infringes on CytoSport’s trademark rights of Muscle Milk®.
This preliminary injunction was prompted after CytoSport filed a lawsuit against VPX, stating that Muscle Power’s packaging, or “trade dress,” was deceptively similar to Muscle Milk®’s packaging. In its decision, the court stated that “VPX has chosen an identical font, in an identical color, on an identically shaped package, and placed the mark on the package in an identical location.” The court also stated that “when the marks are viewed as a whole with each product’s respective trade dress, the court has no difficulty concluding that the two marks are overwhelmingly similar.”
Upon concluding that VPX has violated CytoSport’s trademark rights, the court also stated that “VPX could have easily used a trade dress more consistent with its other RTD products, e.g. Redline, Black Pearl and Pump 7.” Given that the injunction is preliminary in nature, the lawsuit will continue while the injunction is in place.
“We are gratified by the court’s ruling and will continue to vigorously enforce our rights to protect our brand, our marketing partners, and our consumers against confusion in the marketplace,” says Greg Pickett, Co-Founder /CEO of CytoSport.

USA's 2008 Olympian Matty Reed took it up a notch this weekend racing his first half Ironman distance race in over 5 years. Reed won, setting the run course record in the process. "I am happy to be able to win today after a tough start. I feel that my talents were well shown today," Reed said. Known for his strengths across all three sports, Reed had a nasty swim, with a kick in the face and losing the goggles and cap in the chilly 58 degree water. "I got nailed at about 800 meters and then had an asthma attack. I have never had that much time lost in a swim in my whole career," said Reed. "I just tried after getting mad, to think that it is okay and just keep my head on straight and get back in the race at whatever it takes. It's a 4 hour race and I got 3 hours to get it."
Reed left T2 in a hurry in 3rd and quickly took over the race. He then extended his lead throughout the 20km winning handily.
"I am happy with my training and I am happy to be able to show my running form today."
Up next for Reed is the defense of his St. Anthony's title April 25 and then the start of the world cup super series in May.

Chrissie Wellington put on a dominating display in route to repeating as Ironman Australia champion at Port MacQuarie. Wellington smashed her previous course record winning with a time of 8:57:10, twenty-four minutes better than the second place finisher. Chrissie captured last year's Ironman Australia with a time of 9:03. Wellington's win is one of the most dominating performances by any Ironman athlete in recent history. With the win victory, Chrissie kept her Ironman record intact with six wins in six events.
Chrissie Wellington is the reigning back-to-back Ironman World Champion.
